Working Draft Article

Pink Poppy Flowers

For CreComm’s capstone project, we were required to write a 3,000+ word article for Working Draft, the program’s web magazine.

After 7 months of brainstorming, pitching, outlining, emailing, interviewing, reading, writing, editing, and constructing a fully produced audio story, I’m proud to announce that my Working Draft article Life After Death has been published!

The article details my experience with treatment-resistant depression and explores why I never received an unprompted referral for the treatment that ultimately led me on the path to remission.

The challenge: Creating a static print ad of a Super Bowl ad that tells the same story as the video.

The approach: I started writing elaborate backstories for each person featured in the video ad, but I was worried it didn’t match the video closely enough. So, I placed all the people featured into one ad. My instructor re-directed me back to the first idea, stating it had legs and would resonate better with a variety of different audiences. Taking that note, I decided I would strategically place this ad in Rolling Stone to speak to their target audience, and create a series of ads with different target audiences in a variety of magazines.

The outcome: I learned to trust my creative instincts.

Writing

The challenge: Usually films have actors and a crew. I had neither.

The approach: With only a few hours of natural light left, I gathered things I had around the house to shoot a short film. I simultaneously took on the role of puppeteer, camera operator, and set builder, executing 5 depth of field shots.

The outcome: I learned to trust my resourcefulness and creative problem-solving skills.
